Spring 2007
By Patricia Williams
It’s hard to believe that nearly two decades have passed
since Professional BusinessWomen of California was
founded by former California State Senator, then
Assemblywoman, Jackie Speier. Her vision for a unique
conference for professional and business women became
reality with the first ever Women’s Day for San Mateo
County in 1988. Since then her vision has touched more
than 70,000 women.
If you remember the 1980s, it’s no wonder Jackie was inspired.
Women were making history as Sandra Day O’Connor
became the first woman justice to sit on the Supreme Court,
Geraldine Ferraro was selected as a vice presidential candidate
and Nancy Reagan launched her timeless “Just Say No”
campaign. Not to mention MTV and Smurfs – both were about
as big as our hair in those days!
PBWC is still building momentum 19 years later as we
celebrate exciting milestones this year, including the first
birthday for this magazine, PBWC Connections, our 18th
annual conference, and a brand new look for our website.
We’re continuing our efforts to advocate for women’s
professional advancement with our new CEO Helen Mendel
leading the way. We’re thrilled to introduce her to you in
this issue. You’ll enjoy reading about the programs she is
spearheading to help you connect, learn and succeed.
We look forward to experiencing the synergy of success with
you this year.
